Eleanor thanks Markham for the card to the lectures. She might not come due to a foot problem. She has been losing sleep due to the excitment of her new book. She went to the Poetry Society meeting and asked Mrs. Rittenhouse about reading her poem. She is better with her foot and her sleep. She enclosed reviews of her book.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
